Hoppe's Garden Bistro and Wine Shop is the most highly acclaimed restaurant and Wine Shop on the Central Coast. Recognized for Chef Wilhelm Hoppe's seasonally inspired menu, hand selected wine list, a beautiful garden and historical setting - it's a 'must see' destination for locals and travelers on the Central Coast.

Hoppe's Garden Bistro and Wine Shop is conveniently located on scenic Highway One between Cambria and Morro Bay, in the 'last real beach town' of Cayucos, California.

Spanish explorers named Cayucos from an Indian word for their unique canoes. Captain Cass, an English immigrant, founded the town of Cayucos in 1875 and established Cass' Landing. The long pier received steamers from up and down the coast delivering lumber and other supplies, then picking up diary products for the San Francisco area.

The Pedraita family bought their site from Captain Cass in 1876, the main building with the dining room was built on site. The two wings were moved from other parts of town and created the original kitchen and four of the twelve rooms of the old Cottage Hotel. Famous for her wonderful, "reasonable" dinners, Mrs. Pedraita and her staff played host to the Hearst family (long before there was a castle), Padereski played the piano in the dining room and Madame Shumanheinke came to sing.

Henry and Mary Ellen Eisemann bought the property in 1974 and restored it after it had been abandoned since the 1940's. It's an all redwood building, the timbers brought by ship from Northern California.

The present parking lot once held a huge barn for horses and wagons used to haul lumber and products from the pier to locations throughout the area (a rendition of the original front of the building with horses and wagon may be seen in the mural at the south end of the building).

"Hank" Eisemann designed the garden and laid 20,000 bricks. The lower garden contains bricks from the original kitchen's range oven. The garden is planted in the English Cottage style with French influences. It is named for Mrs. Eismann's late mother Ferne E. Wise, who was an inveterate gardener for over 90 years. The Victorian Pavilion was designed and built six years ago and is a favorite spot for large groups or wedding parties. The old safe was moved from the building because of its weight. Legend has it that it held all the gold in Cayucos (which probably wasn't much!) The Way Station and garden have been featured in SUNSET magazine three times.

In addition to many other honors, "Hoppe's Garden Bistro and Wine Shop" is currently rated as the number one restaurant on the Central Coast catering to discriminating individuals, groups and special events.

We hope you enjoy your time in our unique historic setting.
